A shopper sees a jacket on social media. They screenshot it, open a retailer’s app, upload the image, and within seconds they’re browsing visually similar products ready to buy. No guessing keywords. No endless filtering. Just instant discovery.

This is quickly becoming the new expectation for ecommerce — and it’s exactly what visual search enables.

Search is one of the most critical experiences in ecommerce, yet traditional keyword search still forces shoppers to translate what they see into words. That friction costs time, conversions, and revenue.

Visual search changes the paradigm. Instead of describing products, customers simply upload an image. Our all-in-one API transforms that image into an intelligent, real-time product discovery experience.

Here’s what happens behind the scenes.

Why Visual Search Matters

Shoppers don’t think in keywords. They think in inspiration — screenshots, social posts, and real-world moments.

Our visual search API acts as an AI-powered efficiency layer that connects those images directly to your catalog, reducing manual logic while improving user experience and operational scalability.

The End-to-End Visual Search Flow

When a shopper uploads an image, the experience feels effortless. Behind the scenes, a coordinated AI workflow begins instantly. The moment the image enters the system, a Search Memory ID is created. This persistent context layer allows the session to retain intent and signals as the search evolves, turning the experience into a continuous conversation rather than a series of isolated actions.

The image is then analyzed using multimodal vector search. Instead of relying on keywords, the system interprets visual meaning — identifying style, color, shape, and semantic attributes. These signals are mapped across the product catalog using a dynamic similarity graph that finds visually related items in milliseconds, creating a fast and fluid user experience.

Because real-world images are rarely perfect product shots, the system simultaneously looks deeper. Object detection identifies items within the image and evaluates which ones are relevant to the catalog. This adds crucial context and bridges the gap between messy real-world imagery and structured product data.

Many images also contain valuable textual signals. Labels, slogans, product names, barcodes, and QR codes can reveal strong purchase intent. Using OCR and code scanning, the system extracts this information to power exact search, enabling instant matches whenever a known product can be identified.

Once a strong set of candidate products has been assembled, the focus shifts from recognition to refinement. The Result Agent applies intelligent filtering that balances predictive automation with user control. Automatic filters narrow results based on inferred intent, while user-facing filters support exploration and adjustment. The result is a discovery experience that feels both guided and flexible.

Before results appear, a final reranking stage ensures the most relevant products rise to the top. This step balances similarity signals, merchandising priorities, and the intent gathered throughout the session — surfacing what matters most in the moment.

Despite the complexity of this pipeline, the shopper only experiences speed. Product results arrive in roughly 300 milliseconds, object enrichment follows shortly after, and a conversational stream begins within seconds. What feels instant is the result of a tightly orchestrated system designed for performance at scale.
